The State of Representation and Diversity in Military AI Ethics

Military AI has a number of challenges in implementing ethical AI principles, some of which may seem in direct conflict with the purpose of military systems, for example the conflict between expectation for transparency and the need for secrecy. However, other principles we can and should address. One such principle for developing responsible AI is to build inclusive, representative development teams and supporting culture. Without this, risk management of AI applications will fail to meet core standards for responsible AI. This is admittedly a challenge as both the Artificial Intelligence and military sectors struggle to rectify the deficit in representation. This panel will discuss the issues, impacts and solutions regarding diversity and representation for responsible military AI.
